Governance.

Legal & General has a CSR Programme for three distinct purposes.

  • To help to manage Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) risk
  • To help build a good ESG reputation amongst our stakeholders
  • To help bring in knowledge in from outside the business

The CSR Committee governs the strategy and implementation of public targets and meets at least 4 times a year as a governing body. The committee reports to the Group Board.

Group Chief Executive Tim Breedon continued to chair our Group CSR Committee in 2009.

Other committee members include:

  • T J Breedon - Group Chief Executive – in the Chair
  • J Godfrey - Director of Corporate Communications
  • G Hoskin - Resources and International Director
  • E MacLean - Head of HR, UK Operations
  • N Manns - Unite National Officer
  • G Precey - Head of CSR
  • C P Chambers - Chief Executive, LGIM
  • D.S. Miller - Group Risk & Compliance Director

The CSR strategy is signed off by the Board on an annual basis. This means our Chairman and non-executive directors engage with our CSR agenda at least once a year, though ESG issues are elevated to board level during the course of the year as appropriate.

We also rely upon individuals across the businesses who are specialists in CSR to assist in interactions with stakeholders.

ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) Risk Analysis

During the year, emergent risks are identified that require our understanding as a business in relation to the Corporate Responsibility agenda. These material risks and opportunities are reviewed at every CSR Committee meeting held every quarter. These risks are identified as a result of ongoing stakeholder feedback and activity of where we have exposure to ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) risks and issues in the way that we govern CSR across our Group from external stakeholder organisations such as NGO's, DJSI, BITC, Triodos, FTSE4Good, Carbon Disclosure Project, Individual investors such as Schroders, Jupiter Asset Management and HSBC.

In addition we have a Capital Risk process which is focussed upon understanding the principal risks and uncertainties at a group level. This is declared in our Annual report and Accounts.

Our CSR Strategy is defined by our Maturity Model. This highlights the areas that the CSR committee governs.
